History of KSM

1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2009

Keiyo Soy Ministries was founded by Dr. Elijah Korich in February of 2000. KSM is a non-denominational, 501(c)(3) organization, committed to fulfilling it's mission with the help of God. Keiyo Soy Ministries needs funds for a Water Project in an area that has endured drought for several years.  In May of 2000, Dr. Elijah Korich (Chairman of KSM) and John P. Price (Vice Chairman) traveled to the Keiyo Valley in Kenya. [Click here to read their stories.]

1999

Summer

Dr. Korich and his family visited his home region in Kenya during the third year of a severe drought. He was not prepared for the conditions of drought, starvation and death that he met in Keiyo Valley. He returned with a burning desire to help the people in such desperate need. After much prayer and seeking God's will he contacted several friends about the situation and the possibility of starting a ministry to help the community in Keiyo Valley. His desire was to work through the pastors in the area to provide for the physical as well as the spiritual needs of the people in Keiyo Valley. Esther 4:14 "And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this" took on new meaning at that particular time in Dr. Korich's life.

As a result of the visit by Dr. Korich and Prof. Tony Saunder to Kenya in January 2009

PROJECT:             Kamwosor Water Windmill

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Korich, Prof. Tony Saunder and the area MP visited the windmill site on the 5th Jan 2009. KSM took upon itself to ensure that the wind mill is repaired and be able to supply water to the township to ease labor put on women and children by ferrying water.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The present windmill was installed by the then permanent secretary Mr. Donald Kimutai in 1989 to replace an old one which was installed by the Sirikwa county council before independence. The windmill stalled in the year 1992 and has never been used to date. The people then opted to other alternative ways to supply water to the town such as:

  1. Use of donkeys

  2. Human portaging

  3. Use of tankers

  4. Use of bicycles

  5. Rain water collection from roofs

Ever since, water has been a very expensive commodity in the township. Reliable sources put it that a man operating five donkey carts earns Kshs 2000 per day. This translates to Kshs 60,000 per month. A good business! This among other factors led to the reluctance to repairing the windmill.

KEIYO SOY MINISTRY'S INTERVENTION

In a seminar on the 6th Jan 2009 for leaders from six locations of Keiyo District on water (dams)/ environmental protection at AIC Cheptebo conference center, Dr. Korich requested Mr. Yego to visit Kamwosor and to revive the windmill and ensure that it is restored to its initial function of supplying water to the township.

THE FIRST VISIT

  1. On the 28th Jan 2009, the District water engineer and I visited the Kamwosor windmill site and found that:

The community had formed a water committee through election  process with the following bearing the offices:

CHAIRMAN EDWARD KORIR
VICE-CHAIRMAN PHILIP KIMETTO
SECRETARY WILLIAM CHERONO
TREASURER WILLIAM CHEBON

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

1.    Samwel Cheruiyot

2.    Joyce Tigogo

3.    Ismael Chesang

4.    Daniel Kiprop

5.    Stephen Rutto

6.    James Kibos

            EX-OFFICIAL MEMBERS

Ismael Kutol Area Chief
Jonah Kimase Area Councilor
Jeremiah Chebii Sub Chief

  1. At a glance, I saw that the pump rod and the plunger was disconnected and  instructed the committee to remove the pump for proper diagnosis of the actual problem to enable us come up with a lasting solution once and  for all. This was to be done before the 9th of February 2009 when we were to make a second trip to the site.

  2. The District water engineer promised to contribute to the repair of the pump, renewal of the fence by use of angle bars instead of wooden posts which rot and use of chain link to keep off animals and other intruders into the spring area.

  3. The water engineer also offered a new 3 inch G.I. pipe to replace the old one which had rusted and bent. He also offered transport to and fro to ferry materials and the KSM engineer to the site. He had earlier played a key role in the formation of the water committee.

NOTE: The visit by Dr. Korich, Prof. Saunder and the area MP motivated the community to accept and participate in the restoration of the windmill to supply water again to the township.
